This book, though short touches on African, Caribbean, South American, Arab, Jewish and European history in a way that many college electives, undergraduate programs and most k-12 curriculums would never mention. Only through personal research can I say I was aware of most of the facts in this work. However, the lessons therein grabbed hold of my heart. Dr. Clarke writes in an unapologetic, firm manner to drive home a point to displaced Africans and Africans at home. We can change this seemingly unchangeable dilemma. We, however must change our view of Africa and African people, understand we are African and understand our contributions to the world in NOT just Egypt but in Ghana, Mali, Timbuktu, the Sudan, Ethiopia, and Europe. We were in the Americas prior to 1492. The richest man to date was African, the first smelters of iron were African, The first International centers of education were in Africa and run by Africans long before Oxford and Harvard. This book should be mandatory reading in every black home in America and serve as the foundation for our self esteem. Our history was not that of savages and spear chucking monkey men who needed European saviors to keep us from destroying ourselves. We were not formed through the fires of slavery and Jim Crow and should not be content in praising those Africans in America who were the first to be fully accepted into European institutions. We had our own, many times over, and can have them again.

Great read. Intelligently written in a way that makes reading this book cohesive and enjoyable. I respect Ivan Van Sertima, but at times his diction is at a such a high level, you'll be forced to crack open the dictionary on every page. John Henrick Clarke breaks things down in simpler and practical terms. Recommended reading for all people that have no clue of history outside of high-school and college text books.

John H. Clarke has absolutely outdone himself with this work. He appropriately addresses the critical issues that many enlightened and informed African Americans have raised concerning the scandal of "Columbus Day". He astutely highlights the origins of racism in America. Every person should have this in their personal library.

GREAT BOOK !! highly recommend this as read to offer a different historical perspective on the african slave trade and the effect of Christopher Columbus. Dr. Clarke is a world renowned scholar and author and does a great job of capturing the essence of the important key pieces to the african genocide.

Recommend as a textbook for history classes for 7th grade & higher. Another view point on who discovered America and who visited and later invaded America.

I liked the title, and the idea of examining and revealing the true racist and genocide nature of the monster Christopher Columbus and what he represented about European Imperial expansion. But unfortunately the book is one of the most poorly written and publish books I've ever seen. It's worse written than the delusional manuscripts of sad depressed schizophrenic's that I would see from time to time in my psychotherapy practice. In spite of how deeply important these scrambled together documents were, of course no one would publishing much less read them. And this book which was published and I tried to read was not much better. The facts in the ideas and the emotional anger was all there, but it was scrambled together repetitiously with no structure. I could only guess that the author browbeat somebody into getting the book published, angrily fending off any of the helpful criticisms he undoubtedly got, until they eventually just gave in and said let's put a cover on it. As a resource for someone who wants to check on whether they're aware or need to create a list of Christopher Columbus's political crimes, this book might be a value. Otherwise I worry it will turn more people off to the reality that it will educate.

This book seems to be well written, but repeats the author's main premise over & over - in almost every chapter! The value of the information given is diminished by the fact that the author seems to NEED to repeat his main underlying accusation constantly enough that I for one began to wonder if the information given was really true because the accusation was the more important point from the author's point of view. If you're interested in this area of history, you could do a whole lot better by purchasing a different, more accepted book on the subject. At the same time, I am concerned that a significant portion of the negative reviews seem to border on being racist either by overt statements or by the level of vitriol in the comments. I wonder what proportion of the favorable reviews were favorable for race reasons, just as I am concerned about the negative reviews for race reasons. Race of the reader should not come into account when deciding whether a book is good or not!!!!!

Riveting. I found this book to be very informative. I have the books by Eric Williams that the author referred to.Eric Williams contends that the European financial system was built on the backs of black slaves. I am unlearning the myths that I was taught as a child.

Test Tube Families: Why the Fertility Market Needs Legal RegulationBy Naomi R. Cahn

The birth of the first test tube baby in 1978 focused attention on the sweeping advances in assisted reproductive technology (ART), which is now a multi-billion-dollar business in the United States. Sperm and eggs are bought and sold in a market that has few barriers to its skyrocketing growth. While ART has been an invaluable gift to thousands of people, creating new families, the use of someone else’s genetic material raises complex legal and public policy issues that touch on technological anxiety, eugenics, reproductive autonomy, identity, and family structure. How should the use of gametic material be regulated? Should recipients be able to choose the “best” sperm and eggs? Should a child ever be able to discover the identity of her gamete donor? Who can claim parental rights?

Naomi R. Cahn explores these issues and many more in Test Tube Families, noting that although such questions are fundamental to the new reproductive technologies, there are few definitive answers currently provided by the law, ethics, or cultural norms. As a new generation of "donor kids" comes of age, Cahn calls for better regulation of ART, exhorting legal and policy-making communities to cease applying piecemeal laws and instead create legislation that sustains the fertility industry while simultaneously protecting the interests of donors, recipients, and the children that result from successful transfers.

From Publishers Weekly
A lawyer who teaches family law at Georgetown Univ., Cahn (co-author, Contemporary Family Law) presents a fascinating look into the workings of reproductive law by exploring the complex process by which, for an increasing number of modern families, "biology, medicine, human determination, and the law bring babies into being." Artificial Reproductive Technology-in vitro fertilization, surrogate mothers-has become a multi-billion dollar industry that is, in the U.S., comparatively unregulated. Because family law differs across states, everything from the liability of fertility clinics to the rights of donors, donor children and the hopeful couples create a thicket of legal issues. Complicated contesting claims include a 2006 case in which an Ohio couple, James Flynn and Eileen Donich, sued their gestational carrier, Penn. resident Danielle Bimber, when she refused to give up her triplets. The case was tried in both states, and ultimately decided in favor of Flynn-the biological father-but not Donich, who was accorded no standing by the court. Cahn's case for a uniform, federal legal code is compelling and vivid. (Jan.).

Review

“Cahn’s case for a uniform, federal legal code is compelling and vivid.”
-Publishers Weekly

“In her historical and contemporary analysis of legal regulation in each of these areas, she weaves erudite yet accessible translations of law, vivid depictions of cases, and personal insights to portray an industry critically in need of oversight.”
-New England Journal of Medicine

“This thoughtful and compelling book unveils the complexities of the gamete industry . . . Cahn writes in a manner that is engaging, entertaining and, to be honest, transforming.”
-Adoption Quarterly

“Professor Cahn proposes some useful reforms. Her proposals include legal consistency, particularly over the identity of donor conceived children and the rights of parents; transparency; a requirement to test gametes for serious genetic conditions; the provision of counseling to ‘consumers’; and restrictions on the number of donations by any one donor.”-Bio News

"In the United States, there is a competitive market in human eggs provided for reproductive purposes.  An 'extraordinary' egg donor can earn as  much as $50,000 when she offers her eggs to an infertile couple.  In California, however, that same 'extraordinary' individual would receive nothing, aside from payment for her direct expenses, if she provided those same eggs for research purposes.  That could change soon." -Naomi Cahn and June Carbone,Los Angeles Times

“In her careful and detailed analysis, Cahn builds a lawyerly case for comprehensive federal and state laws governing infertility treatment and establishing the legal rights and obligations of everyone involved in the process.”
-Bitch Magazine

“In describing the lengths to which people will go in order to produce a biological child, Cahn is both respectful of this very human desire and sensitive to the ethical and legal issues that result . . . That she also writes in accessible prose makes this a valuable text.”
-Choice

"Test Tube Families explores autonomy implicitly by examining the nature of relationships involved in the process of assisted conception using medical technology, and focusing on the reulatory environment in the USA." -Hazel Biggs,Feminist Legal Studies
